Ontario History Quest was developed by a partnership of the Toronto Public Library with the Archives of Ontario and the City of Toronto Archives, funded in part by the Ontario Ministry of Culture Library Strategic Development Fund: Digital Alliances Programme. Additional funding for this initiative was provided by the Toronto Public Library, and by the Archives of Ontario as part of their 100th anniversary. Phase 2 of OHQ was undertaken by the Toronto Public Library in partnership with the Archives of Ontario and Library and Archives Canada. Funding was provided in part by the Ontario Ministry of Culture Library Strategic Development Fund and the Department of Canadian Heritage, Canadian Culture Online Program.



Archives of Ontario

Archives of Ontario
The Archives of Ontario has the legislated responsibility to identify and preserve Ontario's documentary memory. It gathers and makes available to the public the important records of government and private records of significant heritage value. These records are in a wide variety of media. The Archives has a large and varied collection of maps, drawings, photographs and drawings that document the history of Ontario.
The Archives of Ontario was a partner supporting the development of the first and second phases of Ontario History Quest.

 

Toronto Archives

City of Toronto Archives
The City of Toronto Archives acquires, preserves and provides access to a wide range of government and non-government records dating back to 1834, much of which is available to the public through an on-line descriptive database. The records include photographs, maps, architectural and engineering plans; postcards, drawings and political cartoons; correspondence, diaries and other textual materials documenting various aspects of Toronto’s history.
The City of Toronto Archives was a partner supporting the development of the first phase of Ontario History Quest.

Canadian Culture Online is part of the Department of Canadian Heritage's strategy to encourage a uniquely Canadian presence on the Internet. The program works with Canada's creators, cultural industries, communities and institutions to produce and make available to Canadians the digital cultural content that will help promote our country's rich culture, history, arts and heritage.
The Canadian Culture Online Program Partnerships Fund provided funding support with Library and Archives Canada for the development of the second phase of Ontario History Quest.

Library and Archives Canada is an innovative knowledge institution that combines the collections, services and staff expertise of the former National Library of Canada and National Archives of Canada. It’s objective is to provide all Canadians with easy, one-stop access to the texts, photographs and other documents that reflect their cultural, social and political development.
Library and Archives Canada is a partner supporting the development of the second phase of Ontario History Quest and providing funding support through the Department of Canadian Heritage Canadian Culture Online Programme Memory Fund.

 

Ontario Ministry of Culture
The Ontario Ministry Culture has responsibility for the administration of the Public Libraries Act. The ministry's Heritage and Libraries Branch develops provincial policies for the public library system. The branch’s Library Strategic Development Fund: Digital Alliances Programme helps bolster strong communities and student success by funding initiatives that will enhance public libraries across Ontario. This funding assists the public library community to implement strategic planning priorities and conduct provincial level research and development, to better serve their customers.
The Ministry of Culture Library Strategic Development Fund has provided funding (2000, 2003, 2005) to support the development of the Digital Collections and Ontario History Quest websites.

About the Toronto Public Library
Toronto Public Library is the largest public library system in Canada with 99 branch locations and two Research and Reference Libraries - the Toronto Reference Library at 789 Yonge Street and the North York Central Library at 5120 Yonge Street.

Collections number over 12 million items in a wide variety of formats, in more than 100 languages. The library loans over 29 million items and answers about 8 million information questions every year. Each year, about 21 million virtual visits are logged. The Library is committed to creating and organizing web-based resources and assisting users in locating reliable and authoritative information.

The Library provides leadership, human and technical resources, and contributes to the funding that supports the Digital Collections and associated websites.
